Voices of Alex Ward: A Dark Psychological Thriller About a Detective Battling Dissociative Identity Disorder to Catch a , (Paperback)

What happens when the protector becomes the predator?

Detective Alex Ward has spent twenty-three years bringing criminals to justice. But when the legal system fails and predators walk free, something inside him fractures. During blackouts he can't explain, four men are executed, and vigilante justice is delivered with clinical precision.

The killer is Marcus. A protector born from childhood trauma. An alternate identity that emerged when Alex was eight years old and needed someone strong enough to survive the unsurvivable. For two decades, Marcus lay dormant. Until the justice system's failures awakened him.

Now Alex stands in a warehouse with blood on his hands and no memory of how it got there. The evidence is overwhelming. The confession was inevitable. But how do you prosecute a man for murders he didn't consciously commit? How do you hold someone accountable when their consciousness was literally fractured at the time of the crime?

Four men are dead. One was innocent.

As Alex's trial unfolds, a devastating truth emerges: vigilante justice operated on incomplete information. David Kellerman, James Rourke, Anthony Pascale, and Malcolm Thorne were each executed based on certainty that was catastrophically wrong. And now Alex must face not only the legal consequences of murder but also the moral weight of having destroyed lives that deserved more than his righteous judgment.

The Shattered Badge is an unflinching exploration of dissociative identity disorder, childhood trauma, and the impossible question of accountability when mental illness creates violence. It's a story about fractured consciousness slowly, painfully learning to become whole and discovering that integration doesn't erase guilt; it only makes you fully present to carry it.

Trigger Warnings: Childhood sexual abuse, violence, murder, detailed psychiatric treatment, suicide ideation, trauma processing

"Uncomfortable, essential, and impossible to put down: a masterclass in psychological complexity."

"This is not a redemption story. This is a story about what comes after the unforgivable and whether meaning can be extracted from irreversible harm."

ANGEL MUKHIYA is the author of over forty novels in dark fiction, psychological suspense, and horror. The Shattered Badge represents their most ambitious exploration of mental health, criminal justice, and the thin line between protector and predator.
